It does not matter if a license claims to be open source, if OSI (Open Source Initiative ) does not consider it open source then it isn’t.

Any law is up to interpretation, it also applies to OSI. If you claim that your project is open source but it is not backed by OSI they will ‘call you out’ to say that it is not.

  • License must not restrict other software
  • License must be technology neutral
  • Free distribution
  • No discrimination against fields of endeavour
  • No discrimination against persons or groups
  • Distribution of license

‘The software shall be used for good, not evil’ – why doesn’t everyone just add this? It is very vague so many developers are wary of using it as they do not know if they can get in trouble or not. IBM asked for a license to do evil, so their customer could use it without worrying.

Aaron Swartz

He pioneered RSS, one of the founders of Reddit all of it before he turned 20 true genius.

On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by MIT police on state breaking-and entering charges, after connecting a computer to the MIT network in an unmarked and unlocked closet and setting it to download academic articles  using a guest user account issued to him by MIT. Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz, he was found dead in his apartment.
